I need meaningful gift ideas for the two daughters ages 8 and 5 of a friend who lost his mother last night. They were very close to their grandmother and we are close to them. Their father grew up with my husband and our children have played together since birth..I do not want to send the girls flowers and I do not have any pics of their grandmother so don't suggest those. But I would like to give them something sweet and meaningful so they know we love them and are thinking of them. Please give me some great ideas.

My husband has recently lost his mother and the other places I have looked have things like african american figurines but thats not what I'am looking for. I have looked on other sites and they offer things like personalized prayer plaques and things like that but they are all based on white peoples beliefs and religions not that I'm racist but I would really like to get him something from his background and heritage something nice that I can personalize for him when mothers day comes around I can give it to him so he can have something to remember his mother and give him some comfort.
Sympathy Gift?
One of my co workers gave everyone in our room a little cup filled with candy for christmas We all work in different rooms . Anyway, I said thank you and such and mentioned to her that I should get her a gift. But she was like " No, you don't have to do that" . I got her something anyway. But I wanted to get her a gift before she even gave us something. I don't think anybody else is giving her a gift. I'm just wondering if it'll seem like a sympathy gift, cuz it's really not. My son's great grandfather his daddy's grandpa just passed away. My son's dad and I get along wonderfully, and we love each other. He was extremely close to his grandfather he was raised by his grandparents , and my son had been around him a little. The issue I'm having is that I live in the South and he son's dad and his family live up North and most of the family, namely his sister, can't stand me . I don't know what's appropriate to send. I really don't want to offend anyone or make things worse, when things are already not going well. Should I and my family send flowers, a care package food, gift certificates, plates, utensils... , sympathy gift...??????? Does anyone have any ideas or help here?????? It would be greatly appreciated
